What is The Front?
The FRONT is an active gallery, arts education space, concert and meeting venue for community residents and artists. Run by Casa Familiar in San Ysidro, California, it is the only art gallery in San Ysidro and is located at the approximate center of the district.
To organize and empower residents in San Ysidro and South San Diego to take an active role in their communities by engaging them through the arts in the civic, sustainability, and quality of life issues affecting our region.
The Front’s History
The FRONT is an adaptive re-use project in that the building was the first commercial dry goods store in the border community of San Ysidro and is a Louis J. Gill designed building, nephew of the more well known San Diego architect of the era, Irving Gill. The 1929 building was restored and re-built to include new services and utilities, restoration of the 3,000 square foot commercial storefront, restoration and refinishing of the two-2nd story apartments, and meet all modern codes.
The FRONT was conceptualized as an idea in 2004, as Casa Familiar’s Enterprise Rose Fellowship came to a close, as a space devoted to the promotion of the arts and community/neighborhood design. In October of 2005, Casa Familiar acquired a space that became the site of their latest mixed-use venture. The project/site is now The FRONT: A Collaborative of Arts, Culture, Design and Urbanism. The long time dream to have a collaborative space (art gallery) was finally realized in 2006 when the property was purchased, re-developed and opened later in November of 2007. Today 11 years later, The Front is an active arts space that hosts exhibitions, concerts, workshops, community meetings and art projects.
